We’ve all heard about home court advantage, but for poor Jonathon Bermudez, it didn’t seem to apply.
A Tampa Bay native (now residing in Dallas), he’s one of our own, and until this year, he had been trying unsuccessfully to win the Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic 5K. The competitive race takes place right here in Tampa each year.
Bermudez, a financial analyst and longtime runner, has come in 2nd, 5th, 7th, 11th, and other literal “also-ran” places.1 You know what they say about “try, try again”!
This year, however, was the year. Bermudez was ahead after the first mile, in a pool of 14,500 participants, and FINALLY claimed the winner’s title with a time of 16:17.2 How about THAT!
His friend, world-class runner Mark Parrish, said that Bermudez has “talked for years and years about winning this race.” As for Bermudez himself, he says that the Publix Gasparilla 5K is “[his] own personal Olympics.”3
Fantastic to see a local win big after going for the GOLD.
