For the second year, the Super Boat Series, the longest running offshore power boat racing series in the United States, held their championship races off the coast of Clearwater.

According to Coast Guard estimates, nearly 5,200 spectator boats lined up along the race concourse to watch this year’s championships.

“Last year it was about 65,000 over three days at both Coachman Park and here at Clearwater Beach,” said Brian Aungst, Sr., Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the event. “We expect that to be higher this year.”

About 30 teams raced in what has been dubbed “NASCAR on water.”  The speed boats feature F-16 cockpits and can go as fast as 200 miles an hour. Boat classes fall into two primary categories, vee-hulled and catamaran.
