Pinellas County HUMANE SOCIETY ROBBED: Reaching Out for Help – Pets Deserve Christmas Too

Thieves steal money and leave shelter rattled when they break into the Humane Society of Pinellas – but the staff still is determined to give the animals a Christmas they deserve.

(Clearwater, Fla.) – – After a hard night’s work at the Humane Society of Pinellas, staffers discovered a robbery that left the facility in shambles. Luckily, the nearly 300 animals were safe and unharmed.

As if stealing all the money from the helpless animals wasn’t bad enough, the thieves also broke down the door, tore apart filing cabinets and shattered all 25 donation banks located throughout the shelter.

Without any government funding or financial aid from state or federal organizations, the Humane Society of Pinellas relies 100 per cent on donations and uses every cent to care for the animals. These donations pay for everything from bedding to cleaning supplies and food.  The money raised goes straight to the pets’ care. With no money, the shelter would ultimately close down and the animals would have to be transferred to an unfamiliar facility.
This year, the Humane Society of Pinellas would love nothing more than to keep its animals and the facility and to give the animals what they truly deserve – a very Merry Christmas – and is calling on the Tampa Bay community for help to make this the best holiday season ever for the pets-to-be. Besides monetary donations, toys, supplies, support and adoption are what they need to move on from this very challenging situation.

In an effort to keep the animals’ spirits high, the Humane Society of Pinellas also runs “Stuff Our Stockings,” which generates toys (all from donations) to put in a stocking placed in front of each and every animal’s cage. On Christmas Day, all animals will be able to get special gifts and toys to make their stay more enjoyable.

The Humane Society of Pinellas would like to give a special thanks to the 29 staff members of the facility; to Billy Connors and Flip and Warren Byrd for working with Safe Touch Security for providing touch pad security to three buildings along with three years of service; to Heavenly Foundations for replacing one of the doors that had major damage and providing us the ability to secure our adoption center; and to the continuing support of those individuals who have given the animals a chance to have an even better Christmas than ever before.

Twila Cole, Director of Development for the Humane Society of Pinellas, reveals her Holiday cheer and sees the silver lining. “This situation has reminded all of us that there are good people out there who are willing to show their love and support for the animals, which is immediately being returned to the pets of our community.  Although the theft was ugly and cruel, this experience has renewed our faith in the people of Pinellas.”
