- Taking Care of Your List
Remember – this is a do it yourself post. We have tried to make it simple for you. So realize there are more sophisticated methods than what we have here, but if you need some do-it-yourself love you will find it here.
Once a year it has been said that Santa checks his list of children, customers, prospect, whoever and finds out who has been naughty or nice. At JoTo we think checking your list should be an ongoing process. Therefore, one of the most important parts of your business; is building and maintaining your mailing lists whether it be electronic, postal or both – notice I said LISTS…plural.
To put things straight, you should have two lists minimally – one with current customers and one with prospects. You could toss in a third with inactive customers. That might not be a bad idea, since you might have a special message for these past customers – I would…targeted messages yield more fruit so categorizing your lists can generate a better return.
If you are sending out regular emails to your in-house customer list you have probably learned the hard way that most email service providers do not like you sending out bulk emails. There are several ‘do-it-yourself-type’ online alternatives – MailChimp (www.mailchimp.com) and Constant Contact (www.constantcontact.com). They are probably the most popular and easiest to use if you are doing it yourself. They have restrictions, but they both have list management (more about that in a moment) and templates for your simple do-it-yourself business outreach.
Maintaining your list does not have to be a chore only for tough guys. We are talking about Lists DIY here – it has to be user friendly yet at the same time professional. There are a few points you should look at that you need for your emailing adventures that are more fun and also can make you look like a pro.
- Subscriptions and Ask offs: Allow folks to automatically subscribe and unsubscribe
- Bounces: Automatically handle bounces
- Archives: All your emails should be available for future reference.
- Responses: Automatically send email messages in response to subscriptions and sign-offs.
- Opens and Clicks: You will want to know how many of your subscribers opened your email and how many responded by clicking on your offer.
Keep your mailing list up-to-date is very important. It is one of the keys to your success. But how do you go about building a list – Stay tuned for next month’s Building a List DIY.
