A healthcare client, Neil Chasan, PT, discusses the importance of baseline testing for concussion management on Fox News.
There are real risks with returning to a sport the same say as an initial concussion. At Sports Reaction Center, Chasen takes concussions very seriously. Mismanaged, a second concussion on top of the first can cause permanent brain damage or even death.
A concussion is in fact a traumatic brain injury.
By definition, a concussion is a traumatically induced alteration in brain function that is manifested by alteration in consciousness, with signs and symptoms commonly associated with post-concussion syndrome.
Concussion is caused by a variety of mechanisms:
– Contact with an opponent (64%)
– Contact with a teammate (17%)
– Contact with ground (10%)
– Contact with equipment or objects on field (4%)
Chasen’s innovative baseline testing establishes the athlete’s normal-state brain functionality. This helps the Physical Therapist and athlete know when it is safe to return to a sport after having a concussion.
